Back to Back W's for Magic Men

Added 14 May 2007

Round 7 was a big weekend for the Big V Magic Mens team. On Saturday night, the men travelled to Mill Park to take on the Whittlesea Pacers. Jay Allen kicked off the weekend's double header pouring in 38 points in a 17 point Magic win. The win however was soured by the injury to forward Boyd Smart who limped off with a rolled ankle mid way through the game.

On Mother's Day, the Magic returned to the familiar surrounds of the BSC to take on a familiar foe in the form of the Southern Peninsula Sharks who defeated the Magic in the 2005 grand final series on their way to the Division One mens title. In what was a physical encounter, the Magic lead at every change to complete a comfortable win 98-86. Once again, Jay Allen led the Magic with 31 points and 6 assists and was well supported by Matt Slaven and Glenn Watts who chipped in with 12 apiece. Steve Carter commanded the boards with 16 rebounds. For the Sharks, Ben Kersenbrock was unstoppable with 33 points.

Following the match, there was even time for a song at mid court. Centre Steve Carter invited all the kids in the crowd to join with the players as they sang the new Magic theme song.

It was quite a big weekend for Jay Allen who scored a total of 69 points for the weekend. Not a bad effort.

The womens team was unable to match the results of the mens team this weekend. The womens team took on a Warrnambool outfit that was fresh from knocking off the previously undefeated Warrandyte Venom on Saturday night. Warrnambool controlled proceedings, beating the Magic at their own game with a strong defensive performance. The Magic rallied in the 3rd quarter and a comeback looked possible, but Warrnambool closed the door on the Magic with execution down the stretch. Warrnambool capping off a perfect weekend 65-45 win over the Magic. Best for the Magic was Emily Matheson with 13 points off the bench.

Next week sees the Magic women on the road at La Trobe Uni while the men take on Bulleen. In a fortnights time on the 27th May, the Magic return home to BSC where the women take on Shepparton and the men take on Keilor in a double header. See you there!
