Womens Grand Final Night Summer 2007/08
Added 9 April 2008 Last night, the womens summer 2007/08 grand finals were played at Xavier College. Following their upset win over the minor premier Punchettes in the semi finals, the B-Team took on the KE Raiders in the B grade grand final. The first half saw both teams neck and neck throughout the first half, before the KE Raiders gained a 5 point buffer at half time, 18-13. However, the B-Team couldn't keep pace with the KE Raiders in the second half who blitzed them with fast break after fast break on their way to a resounding 42-28 victory. Tash Ross-Harris led the way with 15 points and was well supported by Kate O'Connor with 11. The height of Vic Sumskas was a handful for the KE Raiders, as she scored 11 for the B-Team. Meanwhile, over on court two, the top two teams from C grade, Magnum Force and T-Birds rightly took their place in the grand final. Unfortunately for the neutral spectactor, Magnum Force, as they have done all season long, overpowered the T-Birds from start to finish. Magnum Force winning in a one sided affair 45-19. For Magnum Force, Jeanne Thompson led all scorers with 18 while Lauren Anderson had 15. In D grade, the semi final week was filled with upsets as Pink Panthers and Jelly Beans knocked off their more fancied opponents to progress to the grand final. Throughout the entire match, both teams exchanged lead changes as the game was battled down to the wire. The Jelly Beans found themselves ahead at the business end of the match, but the Pink Panthers, cheered on by the Pink Panther himself, had numerous chances in the dying minutes to draw level but failed to do so. The Jelly Beans completing the fairy tale by winning the grand final from the fourth seed. Anna Davies of the Jelly Beans led all scorers with 9 points. Finally, the A grade grand final was up on court one. It was a matchup of experience vs youth as A grade stalwarts The Fellas took on the young talented team named The Move (Portchy). The Fellas controlled most of the first half as The Move struggled to keep in touch. The Fellas holding a 24-18 half time lead. However, The Move, led by Meg Harper staged a furious comeback at the start of the second half and got themselves back into the game. The Move looked to keep the momentum going down the strech. However, the experience of The Fellas came through as they nailed a string of clutch 3 pointers to put the game out of reach. Haeley Addlem with 14 and Gayleen McKay with 12 led the way for The Fellas, while Charlotte Ross-Harris top scored for The Move with 11.
That was all she wrote for another season of domestic womens basketball. It all starts back up again on Tuesday 22 April. In the meantime, check out the individual award winners from the summer season and some photos from grand final night in the gallery.
