Dissapointing Weekend for Magic
Added 2 June 2008 BigV Basketball Division One Women In a must-win game for the giant-killing Magic, Hawthorn played host to a red-hot Diamond Valley squad on Saturday night. After wins over Warrnambool and Werribee in recent weeks, as well as a close loss to Warrandyte, this Magic squad had proved they have what it takes to knock off the best teams in the competition. On Saturday night though, Diamond Valley asserted their dominance early and never let the Magic into the game. With Laura Janes lighting it up from outside while dominating the glass, the Eagles led 21-11 at quarter time and held the Magic at arms length the rest of the way. Janes, who finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, shot eight-of-nine from the floor and four-of-five from deep. Jessica McKenzie put up 14 points and seven rebounds for the hosts but was the only Magic player to reach double-figures as Diamond Valley's defence forced the Magic into 37 per cent shooting. Division One Men In another dominant home win, the Suns opened up a 20 point lead in the first quarter and never looked back, stretching the lead to massive 52 points at full time. The win, Sherbrooke's largest of season, was their ninth straight and 11th from 12 appearances. Josh Bjelan and Josh Smith were again supreme for the Suns, notching up 33 points apiece. The Suns bench, led by 22 points and 12 rebounds from Neil Haining, and 16 points in 14 minutes from Casey Chan, pushed the margin out while the starters rested. For Hawthorn, playing without injured starter Seb Belfrage made containing Sherbrooke's interior players a nightmare. Jay Allen and Jeremy Caust provided much of the scoring for the Magic with 23 and 21 points respectively, but it did matter as the Suns clearly had their number all night in a game they never trailed. Thanks to Liam O'Halloran who not only shared the court wiping duties with Will Potter, but managed to find time to take the action shots seen here!
