Magic Run Riot
Added 16 June 2008 Having had a dissapointing season to date, the Hawthorn Magic womens team found themselves precariously flirting with relegation. The Werribee She Devils visited BSC on Sunday in what was a must win game for the Magic if they were to preserve their position in Division One next season. Neither team troubled the scorers early on as Werribee took a 14-10 lead into quarter time. It was after the first break that the Magic made their move, clicking on all cylinders to scorch the She Devils 31-7 in the second quarter. Lauren Killmister was instrumental on the offensive end with a string of buckets from the baseline. The first half was soured by a facial injury to Kate McCrimmon who copped a whack across the face just before half time. During the half time break, the crowd was entertained by the Hawthorn Magic Junior Development Squad whose talents were on show. Referee Michael Watt enforced the rules of the game but was unable to maintain control of the game as the kids were running riot. Following the main break, the Magic continued to do as they pleased, stretching the lead to as much as 30 points mid way through the fourth quarter. McCrimmon returned to the game getting 2 steals and blocking 2 shots but it was Ash Fennell and Emily Matheson who were the driving forces in the backcourt for the Magic with 5 assists apiece as they took out the game 75-49. Killmister led the Magic with 12 points and was well supported by Hannah Lowe and Elyce Lambrou who had 11 and 10 points respectively. Meanwhile, the Magic mens team were on the road this weekend at Coburg to take on the Giants. The first half was a close affair with the Giants shading it, 64-62. However, the Magic weren't able to keep pace with the Giants in the third term as the Giants opened up a handy buffer and held steady in the fourth quarter to close out the game 123-112. The Magic were led by Stewart Cameron and Matt Slaven who had 29 and 24 points respectively, both shooting a healthy percentage from the field. The men end their month long exile from BSC when they return home on Sunday 22nd June to play the Bulleen Boomers. Anything but a win will all but end the Magic's title defence. Be there to help them get over the line at 2pm. Big shout out to Wattsy for the photos! In the meantime, check out Emily Matheson's latest blog and the Magic Player Profiles!
