Em's Blog: Maybe There Is Something In The Water

Winning feels delicious! :)

Howdy peeps. If you haven’t seen the press release, MAGIC WON! We met the girls from LaTrobe City last Saturday night at BSC for an early game time of 5 pm. Maybe it’s the winter air, maybe there is something in the water? No, it’s our determination to finish off the season with a few wins under our belt to avoid relegation and to get back some of that respect we deserve from the opposition!

LaTrobe came into the game off four straight wins, and their unit must have been feeling pretty confident meeting the underdogs of the comp. Little did they realise, Magic have a never say never attitude and would come up against a determined outfit. The first quarter was tight until some late changes when LaTrobe got a run on and was up 17-11 points. Initially the starters did a fantastic job at getting 8 – 0, but unfortunately LaTrobe got onto a big run and ended up leading by 6 points. The second quarter didn’t begin very well for us, our full court defence that we threw at them to get 8 up was lacking and LaTrobe capitalised. Finally, Knighty made some changes and the girls focused on D and eventually drew back in the lead. There were big efforts from Elise Lambrou, Lowe, Fennel, DeAraugo and Rees. This combination of 5 really worked well in wearing down the LaTrobe girls to eventually be down by a mere 2 points at the half - Back in the game!!!

The third quarter is a blur to me!! Stats show LaTrobe put another 5 more points on top of their lead to be up by 7 in the last. I actually really can’t remember much of this quarter! (The last quarter sticks out!)

Fourth quarter saw a 27 to 11 point shootout, to Magic’s favour! Malin Lindblad really stepped up for us, hitting numerous jumpers! Our defence was thrilling to watch and be part of. We caused turnovers, watched as Carmen Weaver became susceptible to outstanding defensive efforts from Malin and Hannah (and great help-split line D from the rest of the team) and capitalised on other mistakes but putting the ball in the hole!!! YAY!!! End result: Hawthorn 66, LaTrobe 57.

A gutsy win from a gutsy outfit.

We meet Coburg this Saturday night at Coburg, 6pm. If any of you fans feel like coming along, please do, as we really want to show these guys what we are made of (they came down from Championship division!).
