Magic do the Sunbury Double at Home
Added 14 July 2008 BigV Basketball Hawthorn 61 dft Sunbury 50 ON SUNDAY afternoon as the Hawthorn Magic beat the Sunbury Jets 61-50, Hannah Lowe scored 13 points, hit three three-pointers and went a long way to ending Sunbury’s run at the final four. With the loss, the Jets (8-11) retain fifth spot but are now two and a half games back on Coburg (10-8). For Hawthorn, Lowe was supported well by Lauren Killmister (11 points) and Anna De Araugo (10 rebounds, four steals). With a 41-34 advantage on the glass, as well as 18-29 advantage in turnovers, the Magic had too much hustle for the Jets. For the Jets, Kellie Down top-scored but took the brunt of the Magic defence, her 12 points coming on three-of-11 for the field and accompanied by nine turnovers. Erin Soutter had 11 for the Jets. Game MVP: Hannah Lowe (Hawthorn Magic) Hawthorn 89 dft Sunbury 78 THE IMMENSE tightness of the race for the final three spots in the Division One Men’s finals can be highlighted by Hawthorn’s jump from seventh to fourth in the space of one game. With an 89-78 win over Sunbury, the Magic not only re-enter the fold for finals, they also prove that, while some wrote them off after last week’s loss, their season is far from over. Jay Allen scored 24 points for the Magic while Matt Slaven scored 20 points and grabbed eight boards. Seb Belfrage, who returned from injury last week, registered five points, 12 boards and three steals and could be the key to Hawthorn’s finals chances. For Sunbury, a Saturday night victory over Geelong allows them to keep hold of fourth place. For now. With only two rounds remaining before finals, their finals fate rests on them being able to hold off all comers. Game MVP: Jay Allen (Hawthorn Magic) With the Magic women out of the finals race, Sunday's game was the last time we will see the team at home this season. It was also the last home game of Andrew Nightingale's tenure as Magic coach as he returns to Sydney. Be sure you are at BSC Saturday 19th July at 7pm for the last home game of the regular season for 2008 when the mens team take on Bulleen. This game will have massive implications on finals positions so make sure you turn up to help the Magic secure their place in the postseason.
