Magic Players Nominated for BigV Awards
Added 7 August 2008 BigV Basketball has released the list of individual award nominees for season 2008. Some of Hawthorn Magic's finest feature on this list with the winners to be announced at BigV Basketball's night of nights at Moonee Valley Racecourse on 6 September 2008. Division One MenMagic co-captain Jay Allen has had another supurb season particularly on the offensive end leading the Magic in scoring with 22.8 points per game. On three occasions Allen has scored more than 30 points and on two occasions has exceeded the 40 point mark. Allen has been nominated for league MVP and as a guard in the all star five. Versatile forward Matt Slaven stepped into the paint this season to cover the loss of starting centre Seb Belfrage through injury. Playing as an undersized centre for the back end of the season, Slaven averaged 14.7 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game in season 2008. Slaven has been nominated as a forward in the all star five. Veteran Magic starters Anna DeAraugo and Emily Matheson have been a model of consistency all season more often than not leading the Magic in scoring. DeAraugo averaged 8.9 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game while Matheson averaged 8.7 points per game and have been nominated as a forward and guard respectively in the all star five. Season 2008 has been one of transition for the Magic women. Young gun Lauren Killmister has cemented her spot in the starting five this season and has become an offensive threat late in the season scoring in double figures for six of the last seven games of the season. Rookie centre Tash Ross-Harris has provided an instant impact off the bench this season. Ross-Harris averaged 5.3 points per game and on four occasions grabbed double figure rebounds. Killmister and Ross-Harris have been nominated as a forward and centre respectively in the all star five.
