2009 Hawthorn Magic Womens Squad Named

For the past couple months, an intensive preseason program has been put together by Senior Magic Women's Coach Mike Funke and Magic Youth League Women's Coach Nathan "Nato" Arousi to see who would make the cut for the 2009 Magic Womens Squad. Each Monday, the players were put through their paces by Nato on the oval at Xavier in a rigorous two hour fitness session. These fitness sessions were followed by the on court training sessions on Wednesdays. During these numerous sessions, the coaches have looked to build a camaraderie amongst the players as well as cut the preseason training squad of 43 down to a final 2009 playing squad of 24. These 24 players would be made up of a core group of senior team members, a core group of development (Youth League) team members and a select group of development players who will play across both teams throughout the season.

Magic veteran and star Emily Matheson was named captain of the following list of players named in the womens squad:

In addition to the squad of 24, six players were offered development positions. These players will train with the womens squad throughout the season with a view to them gaining the necessary experience to make the cut for the 2010 squad. These players include:
