Throughout the 2009, Emily Matheson, along with other Magic BigV players will be blogging on Hawthorn Basketball Online, keeping fans up to date on the inner sanctum of the Magic Senior Program. Look out for Em and the Magic women on the court at BSC during the 2009 season.

Hi everyone,

Pre-season is officially over! Where has the time gone? I can’t believe we are playing our first game(s) this weekend. As per every year, the summer months fly and we look back and wonder whether we have done enough work in the pre-season to prepare for the real competition. However, if the Labour Day weekend tournament was anything to go by then I believe we are in good shape.

As you may have heard, the Division One team made it to the grand final where we lost by a close 4 points to Sunbury and the Youth League team only missed out on a finals campaign by 2 percentage points. Overall, both teams showed considerable improvement from the first match to the last, a good sign for the coming games this weekend.

Training intensity has picked up leading up to the beginning of the season. Everyone has been pushing for a playing spot. It has been a lot of fun scrimmaging with the new mix of girls and working out each other’s strengths. In my mind there is no doubt that the high level of “friendly” intensity we train at will aid us to get over the line when we face difficult opponents.

On another note, the women’s program is reaching out to Junior Magic (girls) and is assisting with training sessions. Please keep an eye out for a Senior Magic player throughout training, they will be there to give you a helping hand and even show you some tricks!

If anyone is interested, all players are looking for a sponsor (any amount of money is appreciated). Sponsors will get a range of benefits from their advertisement in the game day booklet and their info on the Hawthorn Magic website plus benefits such as free entry to games and functions. You can contact our BigV Program Administrator Kevin on webmaster@hawthornbasketball.com.au if you are interested. You can specify an individual player to help reduce their playing fees.

Finally, this weekend both women’s teams are playing – details on this site. Please show us your support and come along and cheer for us. GO MAGIC.
