2008/09 Mens Grand Final Night

Added 21 March 2009

The Boroondara Sports Complex was the place to be last Thursday night as the cream of the crop faced off in the deciders on mens grand final night for season 2008/09.

Kicking us off for the night were the Wellers and Nando's Magic in the Youth League grand final. The Nando's Magic returned for a second bite at the cherry after falling at this stage last season. This time, they didn't make the same mistake again as they outscored the Wellers in both halves led by Matt Hanna's 10 points to win 38-26.

On court two, OTG took on Bali Nine in the A-Reserve grand final. OTG took a step forward this year after scraping into the finals last year. After trailling at half time, stepped on the gas in the second with an evenly spread offensive effort to take the victory 27-20.

The B Grade grand final saw OCGA play the Pacmen. Returning to the grand final where they were pipped last season, the Pacmen were determined to go one better this time. The Pacmen led most of the way and withstood 17 points from Tom Sapounsis to win in the end 40-36.

Temerity's dynasty status was on the line in the A Grade grand final. Having gone through the season undefeated, the perennial A Grade premiers were shocked in the semi finals by the Pirates. After getting past Pro City in the preliminary finals, Temerity had another crack at the Pirates, this time for the title. Temerity controlled the match for the first three quarters on the back of 14 points from Nick Dimitroff but the Pirates surged late to take the lead and they held on from there, upsetting Temerity 43-40. M Roberts and Chris Dimattina leading the way with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Finally in the last time slot for the night, the C grade grand final saw the Arjibarjis take on the St Kevin's Old Boys. SKOB's tried valliantly but the Arjibarji's once again proved their dominance all season of the C grade competition to take ouy the final 50-40.

Meanwhile on the other court, the SC Serpents were staring down the barrel of a 14-0 deficit at the start of their B Grade grand final against Ignition and the game looked all but over. However a ferocious second half fightback enabled the Serpents to reel in Ignition to win 49-46.

Following each match, the referees award votes to who they deem to be the Most Valuable Player (MVP). At the end of the season, these votes are compiled and the winners of this award and the Top Goal Scorer for each division are presented with their trophies at the grand final presentations.
