Season 2009 Off To A Flyer

Added 24 March 2009

The 2009 season of BigV basketball has arrived at BSC. On the weekend, all four of our Hawthorn Magic senior teams were in action, three of them playing home games at the Boroondara Sports Complex. The weekend saw the Magic chalk up 4 wins and 1 loss. Here are the recaps from the weekend's games. The Hawthorn Magic BigV fixture is available from the BigV link on the left pane of this website. Make sure you head down to BSC to check out that action throughout the season.

Division One Women

Hawthorn Magic 58 dft. Warrandyte Venom 51

After finishing 2008 one step short of the ultimate goal, the Warrandyte Venom came into their Round 1 match up against Hawthorn with a chip on their shoulder the size of a Molten.

Regardless, playing away from home, Hawthorn was able to hold off the Runners Up from last year with a very impressive win.

Warrandyte came out looking rusty managing only seven points for the period, but Hawthorn couldn’t take full advantage of their slow start, still they led 13-7 at the first break.

The Venom bit back in the second term outscoring the Magic 20-14, tying things up at the main break. From there, Hawthorn gradually pulled away and came up with the hard fought road win.

Overall shooting percentages for each team were eerily similar in all categories. Natasha Ross-Harris led the Magic in both points and rebounds.

Scoring was spread evenly for the Venom, while Haeley Addlem pulled down 10 rebounds.

Game MVP: Natasha Ross Harris (Hawthorn Magic)

Youth League Two Men

Hawthorn Magic 97 dft. Geelong Cats 77

A very polished performance in the Magic’s first youth league game, building a strong lead in the opening quarter, and refusing to surrender it as they ran out 20 point victors.

Chris Shallue was impressive with 17 points on 57 per cent shooting, while Jerry Juric and Zac Barry contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds each.

Steven Wiasak showed glimpses of his 2008 form with a strong double-double of his own; however the Cats were never able to recover after a slow start.

Game MVP: Steven Wiasak (Geelong Cats)

Division One Men

Geelong Cats 96 dft. Hawthorn Magic 76

Last years Division 1 Men’s Runners-Up Geelong, headed to the home of the Magic for Round One, and were quickly able to get back in the winners column.

After what can only be described as a shaky start for the home team Hawthorn, Geelong headed to the first break with a 24-8 advantage. A shooting percentage of 2 from 24 to start the game proved a hurdle that, even a valiant effort in the remaining quarters, could not be overcome. Relatively even for the rest of the game, the Magic could not make the Geelong lead disappear.

The stats indicated an evenly spread Cats attack with Patrick Philips high scoring with 19 points, ably assisted by Chris Brown with 17 points and 9 rebounds.

For the Magic, returning after a few years away from the game, Nick Dimitroff dominated with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Game MVP: Chris Brown (Geelong Cats)

Division One Women

Hawthorn Magic 65 dft. Craigieburn Eagles 48

Both teams came into the Sunday fixture of Round One with a game under their belts already.

Craigieburn was looking to bounce back from a close first up loss, while the Magic were trying to continue on their winning form from the previous night.

Eventually Hawthorn wore down the opposition and were able to get the victory.

The Eagles clawed their way to the lead at the first break, but Hawthorn fought back taking a 31-28 lead at the main break. The Magic increased their lead in the third term.

They began shooting with even more accuracy in the fourth, while it seemed a variety of fatigue and pressure, sent the Craigieburn shooting percentages the other way. They were held to only one field goal in the last term.

Breannan Small top scored for the Eagles, for the second game of the weekend, with 13 points. For the victorious Magic, Emily Matheson scored 16 points, while once again Natasha Ross-Harris led the team in rebounding.

Game MVP: Emily Matheson (Hawthorn Magic)

Youth League Women

Hawthorn Magic 95 dft. Ringwood Hawks 25

In their opening game for Youth League Womens actions, the Magic were simply superb as they blitzed a Ringwood side still trying to find their place in the competition. The Hawks failed to score double figures in any quarter as they were well and truly outclassed.

Stephanie Perch led the Magic with 17, while Georgia Stott had a monster game with 15 points and 21 rebounds.

Melissa Brock’s 7 points and 12 rebounds stuck on a very tough afternoon for the Hawks.

Game MVP: Georgia Stott (Hawthorn Magic)
