Hawthorn Magic BigV Round 2 Recap
Added 30 March 2009 Youth League Men Hawthorn Magic 91 dft. Sunbury Jets 71 The Jets struggled all night at the offensive end as the Magic continued their run of form to start the season with an impressive 20 point win at Sunbury. It was a tough defensive effort from the Magic, who did not give up 20 points in any quarter, and hauled down an impressive 64 rebounds as they ran away with a comfortable win. Zac Barry was instrumental for the Magic, his 24 points a game high, to go along with nine rebounds. Jerry Juric was also good, notching up his second double-double in as many games. Game MVP: Jerry Juric (Hawthorn Magic)
Sunbury Jets 69 dft. Hawthorn Magic 67 Much like Round one, the Game of the Round lived up to the hype, as Sunbury, extended its winning streak to two, as it knocked off the top of the table Hawthorn Magic at their home court. A great road win. A thrilling game against two of the early pacesetters in Division One, the Jets flew to an early lead, taking an 18-11 advantage into the first break. Then, like magic, the lead disappeared as the Hawthorn side put up a 27 point second term, hitting 10 field goals and only giving up one turnover. The third term was much tighter, as each team traded baskets and the home team took a 56-49 lead into the fourth quarter. From there, Sunbury turned on their Jets and rattled off 20 points for the term, hitting 50 per cent from the field. Unfortunately for the Magic, they could not keep pace and seven turnovers in the quarter, helped Sunbury secure a great comeback victory. Hawthorns two round one MVP’s, Natasha Ross-Harris and Emily Matheson, again battled hard on the glass, while Jessica Mckenzie top scored with 17 points. For the victors, Kellie Down put together 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals. While Sallee Cook hit 18 points from only 11 shots. Game MVP: Multiple
Sunbury Jets 111 dft. Hawthorn Magic 84 Last years Division 1 Men’s Champion Sunbury, were at home again against Hawthorn, hoping to keep the winning momentum they have carried since 2008 alive. The Magic, who lost a tough game to Geelong in Round one, just couldn’t hang with the high scoring Jets, and were left to look elsewhere for their first win. It was a close contest at the first break, but a 27-15 and 36-20 advantage in the second and third quarters respectively, did all the damage. An outstanding field goal percentage (47) for the game, coupled with great defensive pressure, wore down the Magic who fought to the death, even outscoring the Jets in the fourth quarter. For the Jet’s Rohan Bishop scored 28 points, while last week’s MVP Mark Rizza continued his form with 26 points, five rebounds and six assists. Luke Neilson led the Magic with 19 points, shooting 64 per cent, and ex Eltham Wildcat Peter Hayman added 12 points, seven rebounds. Game MVP: Mark Rizza (Sunbury Jets)
Hawthorn Magic 98 dft. Coburg Giants 86 The Magic have sounded a clear warning to the rest of the league with a tough 12 point victory of the Giants at Coburg. After a strong first quarter, the Magic held the ascendancy for much of the contest before withstanding a late charge from the Giants to secure the win. Jerry Juric turned in a massive game for the Magic with 28 points and 18 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards. Paul Kopanidis and Zac Barry also provided support with 16 points and 12 points respectively. For the Giants, John Pilkington had 30 points and 13 rebounds of his own, including 10 offensive rebounds in what was a bonanza of second chances. The Magic shot better from the field and from the line in a game which deserved its title of game of the round. A strong performance on the boards also made up for a relatively high turnover count for the Magic, as they find themselves all alone on top of the ladder after two impressive rounds of basketball in their first Youth League season. Game MVP: Jerry Juric (Hawthorn Magic) Game reports courtesy of BigV Basketball.
