Youth League Women

Hume City Broncos 48 dft. By Hawthorn Magic 68

The Magic came out strong in the opening quarter, taking a double figure lead into the first break, however the Broncos reeled that lead back to just three points by half time. That was as close as they would get however, as the Magic turned it on in the second half to record another strong win, as they remain unbeaten in their 2009 campaign.

While they were not short of contributors at the offensive end, it was in defence where the Magic really took control, allowing just 20 second half points and restricting the Broncos to just 26 per cent shooting from the field for the match. Charlotte Ross-Harris was a force inside, recording game highs of 15 points and nine rebounds. Sophie Blaubaum recording 14 points of her own as the Magic showed their depth by playing nine players for 15 minutes or more.

The Broncos battled hard, however they did not have the answers in front of goal when they needed them. Jacinta Scott had 10 points for the home team, however poor shooting and 27 turnovers meant it was always going to be tough to stay neck and neck with one of the league’s top teams.

The Magic have established themselves in this league, the next few weeks after Easter however will really test where they stand.

Game MVP: Charlotte Ross-Harris (Hawthorn)

Youth League Men

Hawthorn Magic 104 dft. Whittlesea Pacers 65

It may have been game of the round but this one was all about the Magic, who simply dominated every facet of this game, taken a 54-24 advantage through the middle two quarters to run away with an easy 39 point win. The Magic s rebound count fell just one short of the Pacers final score, the Pacers were held to just 29 per cent shooting and had only three assists for the game in what was simply a one sided affair.

The Magic s cause was helped by Jerry Juric, who turned on another huge performance, this time tallying game highs of 28 points and 16 rebounds in just 25 minutes of play. Juric grabbed double figure rebounds for the second straight game, a rare feat for any young player. The Magic also received good contributions from former St. Kevin s duo Chris Shallue and Hunter Santamaria, however the real accomplishment for the Magic s coaching staff was playing all 12 players for at least 10 minutes.

Mathew Rizza was solid for the Pacers, his 22 points a team high, however the shots weren t dropping for a team which relies on its outside shooting for a large portion of its offence.

The Hawthorn Magic club are still waiting to hear the words youth league and loss in the same sentence, after strong performances from men and women this weekend, it s anyone s guess as to when that will be.

Game MVP: Chris Shallue (Hawthorn)

Division One Men

Hawthorn Magic 110 dft. Whittlesea Pacers 95

The Hawthorn Magic were happy to be home after a tough loss to the Jets last week, as they put the Whittlesea Pacers to the sword on Saturday night. The Pacers, coming off an impressive victory last week, couldn t continue their high scoring out puts to keep up their streak.

Hawthorn shot out of the gates with a 34-27 first term scoring effort. The pace slowed down in the second quarter, and although Whittlesea was playing from behind they could only manage 20 points, and trailed at halftime 58-47. Hawthorn shot 48 per cent from the field for the game and although they were outscored by two in the last quarter, never let the Pacers back into it.

Guard Jay Allen led the way for the Magic with 20 points and nine assists, while Nick Dimitroff and Matt Slaven were also instrumental. For the Pacers, Jason Dirkx and Adem Hasan top scored, and will be looking to turn around their fortunes in their second game of the round.

Game MVP: Jay Allen (Hawthorn Magic)

Latrobe University Eagles 68 lost to Hawthorn Magic 115

Two teams with differing fortunes so far in round three, met at the home of the Latrobe Eagles in their Sunday fixture. The Hawthorn Magic, after a stirring victory over the Pacers on Saturday, took aim at the Eagles, who, still searching for their first win, didn t have any answers.

Dominating from the first term, the Magic put up 31 points, while the Eagles could only manage 19. Things worsened in the second term for Latrobe, as they could only manage 12 points. With a clear advantage at the halftime break, Hawthorn didn t let up in the second half, forcing the home side into 35 turnovers, and hitting an impressive 54 per cent of their three point attempts.

For the Eagles Emil Gieset and Kevin Anstey battled hard, while for the Magic, Nick Dimitroff with 23 points continued his great weekend, ably assisted by Jay Allen and Jeremy Caust.
