2008/09 Womens Grand Final Night

Added 12 April 2009

Xavier College hosted womens grand final night for season 2008/09 as teams from A, B, C and D grade fought it out for the chocolates.

Starting off the night on court 1 was the A grade grand final. Kellie Down propelled the Spudders to a commanding 27-15 half time lead with 13 points. The Bullets fought back from beyond the arc as Lizzy King and Charlotte Sumskas combined for 5 second half 3 pointers to close the gap but the Spudders hung on 44-38. Kellie Down led all scorers with 22.

Meanwhile, on court 2, the Illusions took on the T-Birds in the C grade grand final. The T-Birds applied the pressure throughout the match, scoring 12 points in each half while restricting the Illusions to 7 and 9 respectively. T-Birds winning 24-18 as Melissa Hopkins led all scorers with 8.

Following the A grade grand final on court 1, White Magic and the Sharks squarred off in the B grade grand final. In what turned out to be a one sided affair, White Magic stormed to a 24-4 half time lead with Malin Lindblad connecting for 9 first half points. The second half saw the Sharks put up more of a fight but they were no match for White Magic who ran away 54-18 winners. Emily Matheson led a very evenly spread White Magic team and all scorers with 10 points.

Finally on court 2 was the D grade grand final between the Jam Tarts and 2 Non Blondes. In what turned out to be the most exciting grand final of the night, there was only a one point deficit at half time and before scores were levelled at full time. Both teams had chances to win the game before the end of regulation but neither team could find the basket in the final minutes with the score locked away at 21 apiece. However, in overtime, Jam Tarts found a second wind and blitzed 2 Non Blondes 11-2 to blow the match open and take the title 32-23.

Following each match, the referees award votes to who they deem to be the Most Valuable Player (MVP). At the end of the season, these votes are compiled and the winners of this award and the Top Goal Scorer for each division are presented with their trophies at the grand final presentations.
