Hawthorn Magic BigV Round 8 Recap
Added 19 May 2009
Youth League Two Men
Hawthorn Magic 118 dft. Coburg Giants 72
And to think this was a low scoring defensive affair at
half time...
After taking a slender eight point lead into the main
break, the Magic had enough of the Giants and put
them away with a 33-12 third quarter. The fourth
turned into a scoring fest as the Magic outscored their
entire first half total in the final quarter, as the piled
on 45 in the period. The Giants just weren’t able to
keep up with the Magic’s second half scoring bonanza,
or play much defence it seems.
Six Magic players scored in double figures, led by the
reliable Jerry Juric with 23 points and 10 rebounds, he
was backed up by Luther Juric with 21 in just 15
minutes of play. Kieran Kaufman and Hunter
Santamaria also featured in the scoring with 14 and
13 respectively. The Magic shot the three ball with
stunning accuracy, hitting 17 of their 33 attempts;
they controlled the boards with 62, 30 of them
offensive, allowing them to put up 102 field goal
attempts. As a team they also distributed 29 assists,
showing how dangerous their team based, open court
brand of Basketball can be.
The Giants were left to ponder what happened to
what looked like a realistic chance of an upset at half
time. Elliot Carr was good for 18 points, hinting at his
2008 form which saw him among the league’s best
scorers. John Pilkington finished with 10 points and
eight rebounds, and Stephen Gillman struggled from
the field on his way to 12 points.
The Magic remain unbeaten at home and have built a
nice buffer between themselves and the rest of the
competition. If they keep dropping 78 points single
halves, that buffer will most likely get bigger.

Youth League Women
Ringwood Hawks 38 dft. By Hawthorn Magic 88
After losing five in a row, the Magic returned to the
winners list in emphatic fashion, disposing of the
Hawks by 50 points. It was their massive round one
victory against these Hawks which had the whole
league talking about the Magic, they will be hoping
this result sparks a return to form as they aim to work
their way back into the top six. This one was never
really close, the Magic jumped to a 24 point lead at
quarter time and won every quarter comfortably.
Charlotte Ross-Harris had one of the most efficient
games in Youth League Women’s action this year as
she piled on 21 points and 14 rebounds (nine
offensive) in just 19 minutes. Stephanie Perch found
her range, knocking down six threes on her way to 20
points.
Amber Cretella was the best for the Hawks with 10
points, Gemma Bouwmeester was held to a quiet four
rebounds.

Hawthorn Magic 99 lost to Southern Peninsula Sharks 104
In this week’s game of the round, the Southern
Peninsula Sharks journeyed to the home of the
Hawthorn Magic. Both teams were coming off great
round seven victories, which left both teams
separated by only one game on the ladder. After their
win last week against Altona, the Sharks were able to
maintain their winning form on the road.
Hawthorn started the game shooting 50 per cent from
the field in the first term, outscoring the Sharks 27-23.
Despite shooting poorly, the Sharks held the
rebounding edge. In the second term the Sharks were
able to attack from the foul line and work back to a
48-50 half time deficit. In the third term the Sharks
registered 33 points, making 14 field goals and
breaking away from the Magic. In the final term the
Magic continued their accurate shooting from
throughout the game and clearly out rebounded the
Sharks, but could not close the gap completely,
despite winning the quarter by two points.
Returning star player Carl Arts top scored for the
victorious Sharks with 24 points and 20 rebounds, ably
assisted by the scoring of Kyle Reid, Phil Hickey and
the play of Shaun O'Reilly. For the Magic, Nick
Dimitroff top scored with 24 points, while Matt Slaven
added 21 and Luke Neilson contributed a double
double.
Game MVP: Carl Artz (Southern Penisula)

Hawthorn Magic 53 lost to Latrobe City Energy 60
The Latrobe City Eagles travelled to Boroondara to take on the Hawthorn Magic, a team they had faced only the week before in round seven. The result was reversed this time as Latrobe City held on for a hard earned victory.
The first term saw the Magic take a one point lead 17-16. In the second quarter Latrobe City was yet again unable to out score the home side and were thoroughly out rebounded, yet only trailed by two points. In the third Latrobe City hit one field goal and seven foul shots, yet for the third straight quarter were only outscored by one point. Hawthorn was unable to restart their offence and Latrobe City took full advantage of their opportunities over-running the Magic 20 to 10 in the final term.
The home side were led in scoring by Emily Matheson with 13 points and 8 rebounds, well supported by Natasha Ross-Harris with 13 rebounds, nine offensive. While for the victors Jamilee Pearce contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and was assisted by the free throw shooting of Sarah Bennetts.
