2009 Womens Grand Final Night
Added 14 September 2009Making it all the way to the grand final has been the goal of all teams in the womens competition this season. The last two teams standing in each of the 4 divisions played off in the 2009 winter grand final at Xavier College last Tuesday night. Kicking us off for the night was the B grade grand final which saw the top two teams at the regular season face off. River Rats led by Kristy Davis' 14 points held off the Sharks to win 38-30. Meanwhile, on court 2, the giant killing T-Birds who had come from fourth position on the ladder at the end of the regular season to make it into the grand final took on minor premiers KE Raiders. However, the T-Birds would meet their match in the Raiders who demolished them to the tune of 32 points, winning 47-15. Phoebe Bullen's 11 points were instrumental. In the D grade grand final, the KE Lighting, like their Kew East counterparts in C grade, stormed from fourth place to make it to the grand final, in the process dealing the minor premier Shooters a straight sets exit from the finals. They would face the That Team in the grand final. Led by Eleanor Cowlishaw, That Team took out the title 44-38. Finally, the A Grade final saw The Move take on Spudders. Just a fortnight ago, the Spudders upset the minor premiers in the qualifying final but The Move would have their revenge as Charlotte Ross-Harris led them to a 48-36 victory with 21 points, taking advantage of a short handed Spudders outfit. Following each match, the referees award votes to who they deem to be the Most Valuable Player (MVP). At the end of the season, these votes are compiled and the winners of this award and the Top Goal Scorer for each division are presented with their trophies at the grand final presentations.
