Hawthorn Magic Announce 2012 Coaches

Added 18 October 2011

The Hawthorn Magic have announced their Big V coaching team for 2012, headlined by NBL legend Darryl McDonald Snr who will take over the State Youth Championship Men this coming season.

After leading the Magic’s under 16 boys to a championship this year, McDonald was given the senior job with little hesitation.

General Manager of Hawthorn Basketball Gary McDonald said he is ecstatic that McDonald will take the reins at the senior level.

“Darryl’s appointment has generated a lot of positive talk. We are seeing juniors who have a lack of aspirational drive to play senior basketball. This shows our juniors that our Big V teams are the next step in the pathway, said McDonald.

D-Mac will consolidate the aspirational quality of Big V in terms of how our juniors look at our program. He’s a great teacher of the game and we’re excited to have him on board”.

Gary Cleeland will lead the Division One Women after 2010 head coach Kelly Breazeale was appointed as a Victorian state coach.

Glenn Rees returns to coach the Division One Men for what will be his 8th season at the helm of the Magic and will be hoping to lead them into the finals after missing out the last few years. Bruce Beaton has been re-appointed to the State Youth Championship Women’s head coach position after he took over mid-season from Julie Anderson.
