Hawthorn Magic’s 17th Annual 3 On 3 Comp - Fixtures

It's back for another year! Hawthorn Magic’s 17th Annual 3 On 3 Comp will be held on Saturday December 13 2008 at the Boroondara Sport Complex. As GMac says, "This is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!...Teams made up of between 3-5 players are placed in a pool with 3 other similarly ranked teams. Matheson, now a veteran of the Magic womens program had a consistent season in 2008, averaging 8.7 points per game and was nominated for one of the guard positions in the Division One All Star Five. Re-Scheduled MLC Matches from Round 8 Dec 6 - Update

Due to the Methodist Ladies College (MLC) not being available on December 6, all matches scheduled for that venue have been relocated to Genazzano or other Saturday venues. Note: There has been an update to this fixture made on 3rd December 2008. [More Details]

Hawthorn Magic BigV Preseason 2009

Preseason training for season 2009 is well and truly underway for the senior Hawthorn Magic squads. However, unlike past seasons, there is an extra element thrown into the mix for the upcoming season. In addition to our two senior teams competing in Division One of the BigV competition, Hawthorn have added an extra two teams which will compete in the Youth League for both men and women. 2008 Womens Grand Final Night

Last night, the grand finals for all four divisions of womens basketball were played at MLC...First up on court were the last two standing from B grade and C grade. In the B grade grand final, Sadida were able to keep pace with Magnum Force until a series of three point plays mid way through the second half enabled Magnum Force to pull away for the win. Selection into the All Star Five is based on votes from the league coaches for the best players in their respective positions. The format of the finals this season as always is a top 4 system. 1 v 2 for the right to progress straight to the grand final on September 9th. 3 v 4 playoff for a place in the preliminary against the loser of the 1 v 2 semi. Hawthorn Magic Tryouts Season 2009

Tryouts for the 2009 V.J.B.L Championship season will be running for 3 consecutive weeks. The tryout selection process will include practice sessions for coaches to observe players running set drills and practice games to observe players in different teams and playing combinations. Working With Children Checks

The Working with Children (WWC) Check commenced in April 2006 and it contributes to the safety of Victoria’s children when they are being cared for, or participating in a range of activities. The WWC Check creates a mandatory minimum checking standard across Victoria. The WWC Check helps to keep children safe by preventing those who pose a risk to the safety of children from working with them, in either paid or volunteer work...The Hawthorn Basketball Association is currently working to phase in the WWC Checks. Magic Players Nominated for BigV Awards

BigV Basketball has released the list of individual award nominees for season 2008. Some of Hawthorn Magic's finest feature on this list with the winners to be announced at BigV Basketball's night of nights ...Magic co-captain Jay Allen has had another supurb season particularly on the offensive end leading the Magic in scoring with 22.8 points per game. On three occasions Allen has scored more than 30 points and on two occasions has exceeded the 40 point mark. Allen has been nominated for league MVP and as a guard in the all star five. Applications are now being invited for the 2008-09 Summer Season. Knowing a win would all but secure a finals berth for the Magic, the backcourt combination of Jay Allen and Chris Bellesini got the Magic going on offence with a flurry of 3 point bombs. Jazzy Jay Lights Up BSC

Like the women did in their game, the Magic men came out firing and established control of the game early. Numerous deflections, steals and defensive stops heaped the pressure on the visiting Gators and led to easy fast break points. As Altona started to find their feet in the contest, Jay Allen started to find his stroke from the perimeter. When the half was done, the Magic had a 51-39 lead and Allen had 24 points. 2008 Referees Action Day Report

With the school holidays having started, it meant a weekend off for all associated with the junior domestic competition. Well, that couldn't be said of the referees at the Hawthorn Basketball Association. At the start of the year, the Referees Development Committee at Hawthorn was formed to look after the best interests of our referees and to improve the level of refereeing in the association. An initiative of the association was the revival of the Referees Action Day, which was held on Saturday. It was a chance for our referees to learn and improve on their skills and rule knowledge. There has been a change of game times for the round 13 clashes at BSC this Saturday 28th June. The Division One women clash between the Hawthorn Magic and LaTrobe City will tip off at 5pm and will be followed by the Division One mens clash between the Magic men and the Altona Gators at 7pm. Calling all referees! June 28 (Saturday) 11am-2.30pm at Xavier College is the date, time and place of the Referee’s Action Day. The workshop will comprise a program of both practical and theory components, culminating with VBRA President, Steve Chadd addressing the troops. Having had a dissapointing season to date, the Hawthorn Magic womens team found themselves precariously flirting with relegation. The Werribee She Devils visited BSC on Sunday in what was a must win game for the Magic if they were to preserve their position in Division One next season. The Phasing-in Plan for the Working with Children (WWC) Check has recently been updated. Those who perform ‘child related work’ as an employee or volunteer in connection with the sport and recreation activities now specified in the phasing in plan need to apply between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009. Further Changes to Junior Fixtures Starting Round 6

Following the release of the amended junior fixtures, further changes have been made to the 12G4, 14/1 and 14G5 fixtures. Triple Delight for Magic

On Saturday night, the Magic women hosted Warrnambool in their Division One Womens BigV clash at BSC. Going into the game, the Magic had dropped 8 straight and needed a win to keep their slim finals hopes alive...Following the womens match, the Magic men were up Whittlesea, who featured a familiar face in David Walsh. Womens Award Winners Summer 2007/08

Following each match of the regular season, the referees award votes (3, 2 and 1) to players they judge to be the most valuable players during that match. At the end of the season, these votes are tallied and the player with the most votes is awarded the most valuable player award for their respective division. [More Details]
