Hawthorn Magic BigV Preseason 2009

Preseason training for season 2009 is well and truly underway for the senior Hawthorn Magic squads. However, unlike past seasons, there is an extra element thrown into the mix for the upcoming season. 2008 Womens Grand Final Night

Last night, the grand finals for all four divisions of womens basketball were played at MLC...First up on court were the last two standing from B grade and C grade. In the B grade grand final, Sadida were able to keep pace with Magnum Force until a series of three point plays mid way through the second half enabled Magnum Force to pull away for the win. Selection into the All Star Five is based on votes from the league coaches for the best players in their respective positions. The tryout selection process will include practice sessions for coaches to observe players running set drills and practice games to observe players in different teams and playing combinations. Working With Children Checks

The Working with Children (WWC) Check commenced in April 2006 and it contributes to the safety of Victoria’s children when they are being cared for, or participating in a range of activities. The WWC Check creates a mandatory minimum checking standard across Victoria. BigV Basketball has released the list of individual award nominees for season 2008. Some of Hawthorn Magic's finest feature on this list with the winners to be announced at BigV Basketball's night of nights ...Magic co-captain Jay Allen has had another supurb season particularly on the offensive end leading the Magic in scoring with 22.8 points per game. On three occasions Allen has scored more than 30 points and on two occasions has exceeded the 40 point mark. Allen has been nominated for league MVP and as a guard in the all star five. Jazzy Jay Lights Up BSC

Like the women did in their game, the Magic men came out firing and established control of the game early. Numerous deflections, steals and defensive stops heaped the pressure on the visiting Gators and led to easy fast break points. 2008 Referees Action Day Report

With the school holidays having started, it meant a weekend off for all associated with the junior domestic competition. Well, that couldn't be said of the referees at the Hawthorn Basketball Association. At the start of the year, the Referees Development Committee at Hawthorn was formed to look after the best interests of our referees and to improve the level of refereeing in the association. An initiative of the association was the revival of the Referees Action Day, which was held on Saturday. It was a chance for our referees to learn and improve on their skills and rule knowledge. The workshop will comprise a program of both practical and theory components, culminating with VBRA President, Steve Chadd addressing the troops. On Saturday night, the Magic women hosted Warrnambool in their Division One Womens BigV clash at BSC. Going into the game, the Magic had dropped 8 straight and needed a win to keep their slim finals hopes alive...Following the womens match, the Magic men were up Whittlesea, who featured a familiar face in David Walsh.
