REMINDER: HEAT POLICY

Ahead of expected high temperatures this weekend, Basketball Hawthorn reminds all members of Basketball Victoria’s policy in relation to participation in extreme heat:

(i) In the event of the court temperature reaching or exceeding 30◦C

At the supervisor’s discretion (usually if the court temperature reaches or exceeds 30◦C), the referees MUST call a compulsory referee’s time-out close to the half way mark in each half.

Each team is allowed a maximum of three (3) time-outs per game but MUST use a minimum of 1 time-out per half. In the event that the teams do not use a time-out as required, the referees will intervene and call a time-out and attribute them to the respective teams.

(ii) In the event of the court temperature reaching or exceeding 35◦C

The referees MUST call a compulsory referee’s time-out close to the half way mark in each half.

Each team is allowed a maximum of three (3) time-outs per game but MUST use a minimum of 1 time-out per half. In the event that the teams do not use a time-out as required, the referees will intervene and call a time-out and attribute them to the respective teams.

(iii) In the event of the court temperature reaching or exceeding 40◦C

The match must be abandoned immediately. As soon as a match is abandoned due to the court temperature reaching 40◦C, all subsequent matches at that stadium will also be abandoned. The Abandoned Matches policy comes into effect in relation to match results, player qualifications and applicable refunds. Had any of these matches previously been forfeited by advance notification, they will be treated as abandoned matches as opposed to a forfeit.

Games will only be cancelled if the ON-COURT temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, not the OUTSIDE temperature.

Additionally we should be reminding Players, Coaches, Team Managers, Scorers and Spectators, and Referees, of the importance of hydration pre, during and post-game.
