Hawthorn Magic’s Under 14/1 Boys team get their chance to right some wrongs, with a tilt at the National Championships title, at Dandenong Stadium, next week.
The teams’ season has been tough and hard fought. With key players beset by long-term injuries early in the season, we had to call up recruits from our under 14/2 team, to field 7 players for some games, as well as rely heavily on the rest of the team to step up and leave all they had out there on the court. We played some amazing games during this time, with the absolute highlight being a win against Dandenong to secure a spot in the Nationals tournament…must have been all that support from the injured players on the bench, even though it looked like the Emergency Department on a Sunday afternoon!
The Classic tournament, played over the June long weekend, saw our team, still undermanned thanks to injuries, make it all the way to the Grand Final. Sadly, though we were defeated by Dandenong that day. The majority of boys in both our team and Bulleen’s team have been playing each other for several seasons, since we were all 9 years old, but we’d never managed to get over the line in all that time until later in this regular season, with our full team in play, we convincingly beat them two weeks in a row! We went from strength to strength over the last few regular games and into the finals, with some great teamwork and great wins. Having got the Bulleen ‘monkey off our back,’ it was time to meet our other nemesis, Eltham, in the preliminary final. A lapse in the 2nd quarter that our team just couldn’t recover from, saw us bow out and Eltham go on to play Dandenong in the Grand Final, with Dandenong the victors.
Our preparation for the tournament has been really thorough and we’re excited about meeting and beating both Eltham and Dandenong next week!
