The Big V Season might be over, but during the off-season we will be hearing from a number of our Magic Big V players.
We start our series looking at Ben Waldren from the Championship Men’s team who finished a respectable 10th position. Ben had a fantastic season finishing with 19.7 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game as one of our most consistent players.
We asked him a few questions earlier in the season about his Magic career so far.
Which position do you play?
SF
How did you first get involved with playing? What age did you start playing?
I played since I was young, but I was very into my footy. After a few serious injuries I had to give it up, and got more involved in basketball!
How did you get involved at Hawthorn Magic?
One of my mates Brenton Lenaghan invited me down to training one night. I decided to come back every week till I made a team.
What is one or two things you typically do during a training session that are keys to your success?
Work hard, and train like you play!
Which team do you enjoy matching up against and why?
I enjoy playing Waverly. They are one of the best teams each year, so motivation to play isn’t hard
What is your greatest achievement as a player?
Personally, making All-star teams and winning MVP awards at magic.
What is the greatest piece of advice you have been given?
Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard
I guess we have Brenton Lenaghan to thank. Even though the team may have not made finals, surely one of the highlights would be the round 4 win over Waverley in April.
We should be seeing all the big names at the Big V Magic Presentation night is coming up on Saturday 29th August.
